Autism

What is autism?

Autism isn’t a single condition, but the name used to describe a wide range of conditions. It’s also known as autism spectrum disorder.

Most people with autism are diagnosed during childhood. There are numerous distinct characteristics that are present in children with autism, and the diagnostic process centers on evaluating a child’s behaviors to look for these neurodevelopmental disorders.

How do I know if my child has autism?

Not all children share the same symptoms of autism. Also, virtually all children display some of these behaviors as they move through the phases of childhood. But when a child shows multiple traits linked to autism, a professional evaluation is a good course of action.

Some potential signs of autism include:

  • Delayed speech or verbalization
  • Lack of empathy
  • Avoiding or failing to sustain eye contact
  • Inability to understand social cues
  • Behavioral disturbances
  • Repetitive actions
  • Flat or monotonous speech
  • Social withdrawal
  • Self-abusive behaviors
  • Sleep disturbances

This is far from a comprehensive list. There are many other signs of autism, and they can develop at different points in childhood. Dr. Hasson uses the Autism Spectrum Quotient computer test as one of many tools to diagnose autism.

What are some treatment options for autism?

Just as no two children share the exact same set of autism symptoms, they also have different treatment needs. All treatment paths focus on helping your child learn to manage and overcome their particular challenges and live active, fulfilling lives.

Behavior therapy can help your child learn how to respond to upsetting scenarios and how to make choices that align with expected behaviors. Some kids need speech and language therapy. Changing your child’s diet can also be helpful in many cases.

Physical and occupational therapy are often incorporated into an autism treatment plan. The therapist gets to know your child and customizes the program to suit their needs at any given point in time.

Parents need to know that while their child is the central focus during treatment, parents have to take time out to care for their own needs. Loving a child with autism brings many wonderful moments, but it can also bring unique challenges. Parents are best able to support their children when they’re well-rested and balanced.
